I recently upgraded my digital press at work for Xerox’s new Color Digital Press 1000i. During the switch I opted to have their FreeFlow print server installed instead of the Fiery software. I’m not a huge fan of the Fiery software, I prefer the Creo software but that was not an option at the time. I liked the idea of the FreeFlow because it ran on Solaris instead of Windows. My one concern going into it was that there was no mention of a remote print monitoring capability with the FreeFlow for the Mac, only for Windows. Instead I intended to setup a VNC connection to the solaris box. After delivery of the system, I was rummaging around the discs that I was given from Xerox. One of the discs was for the remote print server. On it surprisingly was a Macintosh installer. I installed the software and tried to run the resulting application. The application started up but did nothing but give me a Xerox splash screen and did nothing else. Never one to give up I poked around inside the application to see what might be the problem. I found that the application was a Java application. I tried running it with the from the command line with the java application but that did not work. I did find however running the application with admin permissions allowed me to run the application as expected and to be able to remotely monitor and administer the print server.
- Open up /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app
- Type in
sudo /Applications/FreeFlow_Remote_Print_Server/FreeFlow\ Remote\ Print\ Server.app/Contents/MacOS/FreeFlow\ Remote\ Print\ Server - Enter your admin password
The software should now load, and you can then add your Xerox printer running Free Flow Print Server. (You’ll need to have enabled remote access on the server for this to work). You can then login and see the remote print server. You can configure jobs and remotely print them…or even administer the server settings with the appropriate login.
